Creativity and Movement: Popsicle Stick Sailboats

We have this basin that I have been wanting to utilize.  Did you know that children and water play go hand in hand?  Popsicle sticks, glue, markers and cardboard from random boxes.

We explored:
- how large or small the sail should be
- how long the boats can be submerged before the school glue gives out
- what we can do to cause the boat to move.

The whole process was a three day project which can be difficult for preschoolers. Also the patience it takes to glue the popsicle sticks just so.  Day 1 we glued the raft portion of the boat.  Day 2 we design the sail and attached it to the raft.  Day 3 was sail day.

Creativity and Movement: Three Little Birds sitting on a Nest

I am always so tickled to see what children will come up with when you simply give instructions and not offer your own interpretation of the finished project.  Lately I have begun to NOT create a sample of the work and just allow them to take my words and interpret the project the way their mind would enjoy.

You can see the many interpretations of the nest for example.  And the design of the birds.  I take this in very deeply and let it inform my 'big girl' work.

We used paper plates, strips of scrapbook paper, crayons, and markers for the nest.  I used simple copy paper for the birds and we did sponge painting on the bodies before adding the googly eyes.

I bet you have all these things in your home right now - I invite you to go play!

Creativity and Movement: Submarines and the Beauty of Deep Sea Exploration

Sometimes I will teach a project with the children without having a sample available of the finished product. I believe it helps the children tap into their own ideas of what the theme for the that day's project should look like based on their own experiences.  This was one of those times.

Creativity and Movement: How Does an Arizona Garden Grow?

One of my assignments as a Montessori assistant teacher is to promote gardening with the preschoolers.  I will admit that this has felt like a daunting assignment.  But I began the project at school bringing to life their first vegetable garden.  THIS challenged me to do the same at home with Josey.  So here is a peek at the first week's results.  The radishes and sunflowers are growing like gangbusters.  Following close behind is the cabbage and the broccoli.  No sign yet of the lettuce and the cauliflower is barely peeking out.

Creativity and Movement: Art Work Coming to our Montessori School

This year I begin the wonderful adventure of working in the Outdoor Environment at a local Montessori school.  I am blessed to have a beautiful lead teacher who is allowing me to take the skills acquired from AMI training and translate them into lessons for art, gardening, woodworking and physical fitness.  This is some of the artwork hanging in our environment.
